Subjects of development Human development represents a unique set of tactics through which power proliferates and extends itself beyond the range of other development strategies. The suggestion is made that the proliferation of power in the ‘developing world’ has a long pedigree and is constantly reinventing its modus operandi – the latest of which appears to be ‘human development’. Furthermore, the paper seeks to provide a detailed exposition of how it is that people who find themselves addressed by discourses of development are systematically subjectified and positioned as amenable to neo-liberal agendas. Finally, a warning will be delivered – that the process of subjectification will outlive ‘development’ and that it is imperative that we, as social researchers, remain abreast of this if we are to regain identity in the ‘developing world’
